On 21 October 2026 the PHP project released fixes for two critical vulnerabilities, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, after details had already leaked. Both were rated 9.2 out of 10 and nicknamed “PHP2Shell”. The flaws could allow a remote attacker to run their own code on a web server.
PHP powers a huge share of the internet, including most WordPress sites and our own Icewolf platform. Security firms including Cloudflare reported attack attempts in the wild. For any business with a website, this was serious.
At Icewolf Designs we tightened our defences before the fix arrived. Then Barry got up in the middle of the night so every client site was running the patched version. Here’s what that rapid response means for small businesses in Brisbane and South East Queensland.
What Is PHP2Shell? (A Plain-English Explanation)
PHP is the behind-the-scenes language that helps most websites deliver content and process information. The PHP2Shell vulnerabilities were two serious flaws in how PHP handles certain types of requests. If left unpatched, they could let someone run malicious code directly on the server without needing to log in.
Because PHP runs such a large portion of the web, the discovery created urgent work for every hosting provider and website owner. We treat these situations with care because website security for small business is one of our core responsibilities.
What We Did Before and After the Fix
As soon as we heard about it, we began monitoring the official channels. Before the fix was released, we tightened a PHP setting that the advisory later confirmed blocks one known attack path, reviewed our server accounts and configuration, and took a full server snapshot that afternoon as a safe restore point.
The official patch landed at midnight Brisbane time. Rather than wait until morning, Barry got up in the middle of the night to apply it. He took a second snapshot right before updating, applied the fix, and confirmed it was live across the entire platform overnight.
Nothing broke, there were no errors, and the snapshots weren’t needed. Restarting PHP only pauses requests for a second or two, so it’s very unlikely any of our clients noticed. This was a security-only change and hasn’t affected site speed.
Why We Could Patch Every Site So Quickly
Every Icewolf client website runs on our own centrally managed platform, so when a critical fix comes out we apply it once and every site is covered.
We don’t have to chase down dozens of separate hosting accounts, different plugin stacks or individual WordPress installations. That’s one of the quiet advantages of managed hosting and care done properly.
We’re a small local business based in Bulimba, not a giant hosting company, but we take the foundations, including timely patching, very seriously. We keep our PHP version on a supported release and are already planning our next upgrade.
Icewolf clients didn’t need to do anything. The work was completed quietly overnight.
Is Your Website at Risk? Old or Unmanaged WordPress and Hosting
WordPress itself isn’t the problem. A well-maintained WordPress site on good hosting will have had this fix applied quickly. The risk is with sites that have been left behind:
- Old WordPress sites still running PHP versions that no longer receive security updates
- Unmanaged WordPress sites on cheap shared hosting, where it’s hard to know whether updates have been applied
- “Set and forget” sites with outdated plugins and nobody watching security advisories
If your site hasn’t had any attention in a while, now is a good time to check its status.

This tells you whether you’re on a recent, supported release.
Is it still getting security updates?
Some older versions have already reached end-of-life and won’t be patched, even for critical issues.
Have you applied the fix for CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619?
A clear yes or no is what you’re looking for.
If you get vague answers, that’s an answer in itself.
