Tradie Website Secrets

What Your Tradie Website Actually Needs to Win More Jobs

Table of Contents

G'day, I'm Barry from Icewolf Designs here in Bulimba. I build websites for a lot of local businesses, and tradies are some of my favourite people to work with. You're busy, you're good at what you do, and you don't have time to fuss about with a website. Fair enough.

But here's the thing. When someone's hot water system dies or they need a deck built, most of them grab their phone and search. If your site is slow, confusing or hard to read on a phone, they'll hit the back button and call the next bloke. So let's talk about what your website really needs, minus the jargon.

Tap-to-Call: Make It Easy for Customers to Ring You

The majority of local trade searches now happen on mobile devices. When a potential customer finds your site, your phone number should appear as a large, prominent tap-to-call button at the top of every page.

This single change removes friction. One tap and their phone dials you directly. Many tradie websites still bury the number in a footer or display it as plain text that cannot be clicked on mobile. Fixing this is one of the quickest wins you can make.

Clearly List the Suburbs You Service

Customers search for tradies using very specific location terms — “plumber South Brisbane”, “electrician in Chermside”, “tiler Mount Gravatt”. If your website does not clearly state the suburbs you cover, Google has a harder time matching you to those searches.

Best practice is to have a dedicated service areas page plus a short, readable list of suburbs on your homepage and in your footer. This helps both users and search engines understand exactly where you operate.

Display Your Licence and Real Photos of Your Work

Trust is everything in the trades. Australian customers actively look for proof that you are licensed, insured and experienced.

Make sure your website prominently displays your Queensland (or relevant state) contractor licence number, any industry accreditations, and genuine before-and-after photos of your recent work. Stock images or generic photos instantly reduce credibility. Real project photography, even if imperfect, builds far more trust.

Dedicated Service Area Pages That Convert

Generic “Services” pages are no longer enough. The most effective tradie websites have individual pages for each major service — for example, “Hot Water System Installation Brisbane”, “Guttering Repairs Logan”, or “Switchboard Upgrades Ipswich”.

These pages allow you to speak directly to the customer’s specific problem, list what the job typically involves, include relevant photos, and feature clear calls-to-action. They also give you the opportunity to target long-tail keywords that local customers actually use.

Mobile Speed – Because Most Calls Come From Phones

Google now uses mobile-first indexing. If your website loads slowly on a phone, it will rank lower and visitors are far more likely to leave before they even see your number.

Key factors include image optimisation, clean code, fast hosting, and avoiding heavy sliders or unnecessary animations. A fast, responsive website not only ranks better but also feels more professional to the customer — something that matters when they are about to hand over their hard-earned money.

Keep Your Google Business Profile in Sync With Your Website

Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is often the first thing customers see. It must match the information on your website exactly — same business name, phone number, service areas, and opening hours.

Regularly post photos of completed jobs, respond to reviews, and keep your services list up to date. When your website and Google profile work together, you strengthen local SEO and give customers confidence that they are dealing with a professional local tradie.
